The second phase of the political battle in Gujarat, on December 14, will witness polling in 93 Assembly constituencies, including PM Narendra Modi’s home district Mehsana.

According to poll panel officials, 2.23 crore electors are eligible to vote in the second round of polling.

As per Election Commission data, 851 candidates are in the fray, including 93 from BJP and 91 from Congress.

Modi’s hometown Vadnagar in Mehsana district will also vote in the second phase. Vadnagar, a part of Unjha Assembly constituency, sends seven members to the Gujarat Assembly.

In 2012, the BJP won five seats while the Congress secured two of the seven seats in Mehsana. However, this time, changing equations and the Patel agitation may make the  difficult for the BJP there. The district consists of around 28-30 per cent Patel and about 9.5 per cent Muslim voters.

As per officials, total polling stations are 25,558, where 28,114 EVMs will be used. The Election Commission has put in place an administrative system to prevent any lapses in the use of EVMs and VVPATs.
