ISLAMABAD: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague will begin hearing Kulbhushan Jadhav’s case today.

According to sources, Pakistan is expected to argue that the ICJ has no jurisdiction to hear the case as Jadhav’s alleged activities fall under the exceptions on ‘hostilities’ and ‘matters of national security’.

Attorney General Ausaf Ali will represent Pakistan.

A Pakistani military court gave a death sentence to former Indian naval officer Kulbhushan Jadhav last month for alleged espionage and subversive activities.

A fortnight before the announcement of Jadhav’s death sentence, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN Maleeha Lodhi listed and submitted eight exceptions to ICJ’s jurisdiction in the country.

Islamabad has also repeatedly asserted that Jadhav’s trial is not covered under the Vienna Convention.
