PALAKKAD: The Malabar rebellion of 1921 was one of the first massacres of the Hindu community, said BJP state president Kummanam Rajashekharan after visiting the house of Chekannur Moulavi near Edappal on Monday.
By terming the 1921 rebellion which led to the killing of members of a single community, as freedom struggle, amounts to turning a blind eye on the reality and is humiliating to the majority community, he said. If the rebellion was against the British, why were a large number of innocents killed and temples destroyed, he asked.
Poet Kumaran Asan has portrayed the incident through his works. The act of terming an uprising against a particular community as part of freedom struggle should end as it amounts to justifying a massacre.
During the uprising of 1921, thousands of families included those of EMS Namboodiripad fled from their homes. Kummanam said at least now the government and historians should tell the truth to the younger generations.
