Guru Bhai’s stall, at Parry’s Corner has the tandoori chicken selling out as soon as it is made. The best time to be here is at 7 pm but be prepared to shove and push to get your plate. However, for all the trouble you take, this is the ultimate street food experience — there is no roof over our heads, chairs or even broken stools and the eatery does not even have a name.
I rub lime on the tender chicken piece and eat the smoked part first. The mint chutney is a tad coarse but it adds to the character of the food. Thickly sliced cucumber and onion are part of the salad menu. I am startled by the abrupt, crackling sparks from the grill that I decide to stand and eat like others.
During Ramzan they serve special samosas, sheek kebabs, tikkas and cutlets. Chicken and mutton biryani are served in the afternoons. The chicken here can serve as a main course or as a snack.
Guru Bhai is one of the pioneers in street food in Chennai. He started this eatery eighteen years ago and has regular clients from the nearby banks, Burma Bazaar, Port Trust, insurance companies and other offices. There is a mosque nearby and steady business is assured year around.
I recommend you have the refreshing iced peach tea from the nearby tea stall. Guru Bhai refuses to take money from us. “You are my guest and moreover you have come here with great difficulty,” he says waving to us.
Average cost of a plate of chicken- Rs 35-Rs 50.
