What God does not give, doctors can

The perfect curves and aquiline noses you see on the Telugu film screen did not come from good luck or divine grace.

“Jo Bhagwan nahin deta, woh doctor deta hai” (What God doesn’t give you, a doctor gives you).

That’s the inimitable Rakhi Sawant hitting the nail on the head. More than talent, it is the overall oomph factor that counts in the tinsel town and

actors go to any lengths for the same, even under the knife. After all, masterpieces have to be chiselled to perfection!

Most of the perfect curves and noses that you see on screen are the products not of asome “divine blessings” but power-bleach, armpit botox, stiletto foot surgeries, cleavage facials, anti-anxiety drugs and liposuction. In short, cosmetic surgery.

It is the talk of town in Tollywood these days. Just about every actor has had some sort of plastic surgery! Some want a straight nose and chubby cheeks, others itch for juicy lips and hips that do lie (!).

But that is understandable for their job is to look good. One of the most notable actors who is said to have a keen interest in cosmetic surgery is Ram Charan Tej, son of megastar Chiranjeevi. According to industry sources, Ram Charan’s looks in the blockbuster Magadheera are a combination of hard work and cosmetic surgery.

His relative and a star in his own right, Allu Arjun, has even gone on record crediting his looks to the handiwork of the surgeon. ”The demand for liposuction and abdominoplasty can be attributed to Bollywood actors. The current ‘six-pack’ craze and surge in

interest in fitness has resulted in bringing people to the operating table,” says Dr Ashok Gupte, consultant cosmetic surgeon.

But the interesting part of it all is that not just youngsters but some old-timers too are taking the help of the surgeon to extend their career. Actresses over 40 years go in for what is called, Volumetric Face Lift. This is done to look younger. In this treatment, the face is treated like a deflated balloon. But that is nothing compared to the abdominoplasty — removing fat through a needle from a patient’s abdomen. The surgeon does liposuction by inserting the needle under the eyes, in the cheeks or between the nose and mouth depending upon the requirement of the patient in question.

Ramya Krishna, who is in her 40s, can still give Tollywood PYTs (Pretty Young Things) a run for their money. But she is worried about ageing and is reported

to have consulted a plastic surgeon. Sources say she wants to get rid of her wrinkles and excess flab under her chin and around her midriff.

Buzz is that Nagarjuna and Nandamuri Balakrishna have undergone botox treatment to look younger. How does this help? Botox prevents sweat stains around armpits. About eight to 10 injections can do the trick. The botox lasts up to a year.

Nonetheless, not everyone is in favour of this artificial beautification. Sonu Sood, the Tollywood baddie, is totally against it. “I don’t feel it’s a great thing but still it’s a personal choice. A few have suffered from it and a few have benefited. My call would be strictly avoidable,’’ he says. Says actress Sneha Ullal, “People start taking such measures because  everybody wants to look good. Nobody wants to wake up and stare at his or her wrinkles in the mirror.”

Some stars say it needs courage to go through surgery. Well, it needs a good amount of money as well. But perhaps, Shraddha Das offers a sensible opinion.

“I think it’s senseless and a very short-term act with long-term problems. Anyway, an actor’s life is short,” Shraddha Das points out. Unless the side-effects of such complicated procedures become clearer, or a more real, organic sense of beauty becomes fashionable, Tollywood will continue to go under the knife!
