KURNOOL: Post graduate students of Kurnool Government Medical College had a miraculous escape when parts of ceiling of the 50-year-old hostel building on the premises of Kurnool Government General Hospital collapsed on Saturday. No casualties were reported.
The building, which is in a dilapidated condition, houses 58 students despite the capacity to houses 120 students. In view of the condition of the building, most of the students choose to reside outside the campus. However, those who cannot afford the rent outside, are left with minimal options and hence reside in the hostel.
Over the years, the 50-year-old two-storeyed building has developed cracks and the iron bars have emerged out of the ceiling. The students alleged that despite raising several complaints to Medical College principal Dr Ram Prasad and health minister Kamineni Srinivas, no repair works were taken up.
However, after the latest incident, the principal inspected the condition and assured necessary repairs to the hostel building.
