NEW DELHI: The CRPF has recommended to the Union Home Ministry to confer highest gallantry medal Ashok Chakra to Commandant Chetan Cheetah for his gallant action during an operation in Jammu and Kashmir in which neutralised a dreaded LeT commander despite sustaining nine bullets in an encounter.

Despite all odds, the 45 year old officer recovered from the life threatening injuries including a bullet lodged in his brain, grievous injury in one eye and fractured torso among others after undergoing treatment at the AIIMS trauma centre for about two months.

Cheetah had during an operation on February 14 braved firing from the LeT terrorists and killed the outfit commander Abu Musaib at Bandipora in Jammu and Kashmir.

The highest medal if cleared by the Government will inspire other officers for maintaining high level of motivation and dedication to work in line of duty, an official said.

The paramilitary has also recommended to the Government to accord the Ashok Chakra to another commandant Pramod Kumar, who was martyred on August 15 last year during an encounter in Srinagar in which he neutralised two terrorists.
