SRI NAGAR: A Pulwama-type terror attack was averted on Thursday when security forces detected a car containing 40-45 kg of high-grade explosives in the militancy-hit district of Jammu and Kashmir. According to security officials, Jaish-e-Mohammad had planned to target a CRPF convoy of 400 officials and jawans in a plan that mirrored the February 14, 2019 suicide car bombing, which claimed the lives of 44 personnel of the paramilitary force.
The CRPF convoy of nearly 20 vehicles was supposed to start from Srinagar at around 7 am on Thursday. IGP, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, said security agencies had received inputs that HM and Jaish militants were planning suicide attack on forces in Pulwama. Security was heightened in the district and check-points of Army, police and CRPF set up.
On Wednesday evening, security personnel manning a check-point at Avengund village noticed a white-Santro car with a fake number plate approaching. When they fired warning shots, the militant driving the car sped from the spot. The vehicle was intercepted at another check-point, where the driver left the vehicle behind and fled, taking advantage of darkness, the IGP said. Security agencies suspect a local HM militant, Adil,was driving the car.
After the personnel found the car laden with explosives like nitrate salt, ammonium nitrate, nitro glycerin, whole area was cordoned off. Bomb disposal squad was called, the car was taken to an isolated place and destroyed.
