LUCKNOW: A six-year-old boy was killed, and four people were injured after a 21-year-old student returning from a farewell party rammed his car into an autorickshaw and pedestrians in the Banthra area here, police said on Friday.
CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced. Police seized the car and arrested the driver.
Six-year-old Dikshant Patel was walking with his mother, Sadhna, 35, and grandmother, Meena Devi, 60, both from Unnao. Dikshant suffered a severe head injury and later died during treatment. The other injured are Sadhna, Meena Devi, Arman, Pramod Kumar and Awadh Bihari.
According to police sources, the student was returning home after attending a farewell party at his school. His father runs a cement and iron business. During the preliminary inquiry, police said the boy had borrowed his friend’s car to attend the function.
After the event, he set out for home along with four schoolmates. He first dropped three of them at their respective locations. The accident occurred while he was on his way to drop off the fourth one.
Police said the minor lost control of the vehicle. The car first hit an auto-rickshaw and then ploughed into pedestrians near the Hanuman temple in Banthara.
A case was registered at Banthara police station under sections related to rash and negligent driving.
“The driver has claimed that the accident occurred after one of the car’s tyres burst. The vehicle belongs to his friend. We have detained the driver and seized the car,” said Rajnish Sharma, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Lucknow.
After the crash, the accused tried to flee. He later abandoned the vehicle and escaped with a friend. Police later tracked him down and detained him.
