New Delhi, Dec 19 (PTI) An Indian man bound for Bangkokwas today apprehended at the Delhi international airport forallegedly trying to smuggle out gold worth Rs 45 lakh byconcealing it in a metal strip on his baggage, the CISF said.

On-duty Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)personnel early today intercepted Abdul Nizar, 27, at theIndira Gandhi International Airport when he was undergoingsecurity checks.

During the X-ray scanning of his bag, a CISF officialdetected suspicious images and called him for a detailedfrisking, it said.

"A 1.5-kg gold strip was fixed on the metal border of thebag and was cleverly coated with mercury. This was done toavoid detection by authorities. About 3 kg of saffron was alsorecovered from the same bag," a CISF spokesperson said.

The man, who arrived from Dubai at the IGI airport andwas supposed to take off for Bangkok, has been handed over tothe Customs authorities for further investigation, he said.

The value of the seized gold strip is estimated to beabout Rs 45 lakh, while the saffron is valued at Rs six lakh,he said. PTI NESABH.
