Injured Morkel to miss rest of Champions Trophy

South Africa strike bowler Morne Morkel was ruled out of the rest of the Champions Trophy on Friday due to a thigh injury.

Morkel pulled up with a problem to his left quadricep muscle while bowling during South Africa's 26-run loss to India in the opening match of the event on Thursday.

The fast bowler was forced to leave the field immediately and later underwent a scan that ruled him out.

"Morne had an MRI scan done on him and it confirmed a grade-one injury to his left quadriceps muscle," Team manager Mohammed Moosajee said. "His recovery time will take almost three weeks because the scan also detected a tear to the connecting tissue that surrounds the muscle, which is called a myofascial tear, so that rules him out of the tournament."

South Africa has called up allrounder Chris Morris as a replacement ahead of its next Group B match against Pakistan at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Monday.

Morkel's absence is another blow for South Africa, which is already without experienced duo Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis, while fast bowler Dale Steyn missed the game against India with a side strain.

Steyn's fitness will be assessed in the coming days.
