Tamil Nadu captain and Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik has been picked as a second wicketkeeper for the Champions Trophy to be held in England.
Karthik’s inclusion has helped the selectors cover two bases – that of the second wicketkeeper and third opener slot. Karthik, who is in splendid form in the IPL, can play as an opener as he has done in the past in case Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay suffer an injury.
“I’m delighted and happy to be back in the side. I’m looking forward to do well in England,’’ said Karthik. The chairman of the selection committee Sandeep Patil has high regard for Karthik. He coached him in his India A days. Is Karthik mentally prepared for the job, for being in and out of the team is not easy?
“I have not yet thought about the Champions Trophy. I first want to do well and finish the IPL and then think about Champions Trophy. There is nothing like playing for India and if given an opportunity I will give my best,’’ said Karthik. Although TN did not fare well in the Ranji this season, Karthik was the mainstay of TN.
“I had a good domestic season where I got some runs. Thanks to the Mumbai Indians, I was promoted to No 3 and there too I found success. I guess these factors helped me get back.’”
