HYDERABAD: An ardent Telangana advocate, despairing of the chances of Statehood for the region in the wake of vehement opposition from Andhra and Rayalaseema leaders, ended his life today.
Yenapalli Dayakar Reddy hanged himself from the ceiling in his house at Byramalguda last night.
According to family members, around 10:00 p.m., 36- year-old Dayakar Reddy walked into the bedroom where his wife, Vasavi and their two children were already asleep.
Minutes later, he hanged himself from the ceiling using a ``lungi’’.
On hearing her husband’s cries, Vasavi woke up. Stunned for a few seconds, she cut the lungi with scissors.
Unable to lift her husband to take him to hospital, she telephoned her brother-in-law, Rajashekhar, who stays nearby. They then shiften him to Kamineni Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
“Over the last two days, Dayakar was disturbed after watching various news channels and the opposition by some leaders to a separate State,’’ Dayakar’s friend and advocate M Ram Murthy said.
Dayakar Reddy hails from Dhacharam village in Mothukur mandal, Nalgonda district.
LB Nagar Inspector K Dronacharyulu told Express that police did not find any suicide note in his house and it was family members who informed him that Dayakar Reddy had committed suicide in support of a separate Telangana.
“According to Dayakar’s wife, her husband was very disturbed following the anti-Telangana developments in the last two days,’’ Dronacharyulu said.
Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) senior leader T Harish Rao paid homage to the deceased advocate after visiting Osmania General Hospital, where the postmortem was conducted.
He was accompanied by several lawyers and TRS activists who raised slogans in support of Dayakar and Telangana.
Meanwhile, Dayakar’s family have taken strong objection to reports in certain sections of the media that financial disputes were behind the suicide.
“There is absolutely no such problem and in fact we are in a decent position.
Reports to the contrary are totally uncalled for,’’ Rajashekar Reddy said.
Later, advocates staged a dharna and blocked the national highway in front of the Rangareddy district court.
