HYDERABAD: With the support from all the parties the Congress nominee and Tenali MLA Nadendla Manohar was elected unanimously as the Deputy Speaker of the AP Legislative Assembly, here today.

As Manohar’s name was proposed by Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Minister Raghuveera Reddy, Telugu Desam, PRP, MIM, CPI, CPM and the Lok Satta MLAs and as there was no proposal from other parties, Speaker N Kirankumar Reddy announced that Manohar was elected unopposed.

As soon as the Speaker made his announcement Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, PRP president Chiranjeevi, CPM MLA J Rangareddy, CPI floor leader G Mallesh and Lok Satta president Jayaprakash Narayan escorted Manohar to the Speaker’s Chair and congratulated him on his election.

However, the Telugu Desam Party did not participate in the event and its leaders sat silent in their seats, watching the proceedings.

The Telugu Desam also raised its objection over the Congress party “Kanduva” worn by the Deputy Speaker around his neck as it would identify him as a Congressman.

But Finance and Legislative Affairs Minister K Rosaih argued that there was no dress code in the House. On his part, MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi said that his party has no objection to the Kanduva, but there must be a dress code for the members of the House and advised that the newly-elected MLA’s should avoid T shirts and jeans. The members should look like law makers, he suggested. Congratulating the Deputy Speaker on his election, Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy said that the Nizam College of Hyderabad had achieved a unique distinction by sending Speaker and Deputy Speaker to the House.

Dy Speaker roots for e-petition system

HYDERABAD:
Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Nadendla Manohar has proposed introduction of an `e-petition’ system to facilitate the commoner to suggest on functioning of the House and to bring their local problems to the notice of the Assembly.

It may be recalled that Nadendla Manohar had utilised IT (Information Technology) for digitising Assembly Library books during his tenure as panel Speaker and Library committee chairman during his previous tenure as MLA.

Talking to mediapersons here today, the Deputy Speaker asserted that implementation of e-petition system would bring in greater accountability in addressing people’s problems. Besides making suggestions to the House on functioning, complaints made by the commoner (through e-petition system) would be forwarded to the local MLA and to the department concerned for necessary action. The proposal would be first discussed with Assembly Speaker N Kiran Kumar Reddy before its implementation, he added.

Manohar said that he would not face any problem in discharge of his duties.

He exuded confidence of running the House proceedings effectively inspite of presence of strong Opposition.
