BHADRACHALAM: A tornado of sorts appeared for about 10 – 15 minutes on the Godavari river close to the mandal headquarters of Dummugudem mandal.

The tornado, which the locals say, seemingly formed out of thin air, and existed at the same place over the otherwise serene Godavari water for over 10 minutes, sucked water and fish along with it.

“I haven’t seen anything like this in my entire lifetime,” said a resident of Dummugudem talking about the tornado forming over the river. Tornadoes rarely form over peninsular India. Nevertheless, this rare event, which was caught on mobile phone camera’s by a few youth present on the banks of the river, has started a debate over the future of the region. Some villagers and tribals have started to speculate that this was a sign of something untoward which was waiting to happen. This has created quite a flutter among the people in the Bhadrachalam division.
