NELLORE: Six-year old Narthana, who was tortured by her own mother, was on Wednesday shifted to Chennai as her condition turned critical.

The girl, who was rescued from the clutches of her monster mom, Nagachaitanya (30) from their residence in Venkatachalam town in Nellore district, was first admitted to a local clinic and was subsequently shifted to a pediatric hospital here.“She has multiple injuries on her head, abdomen and back. There are cuts on her legs and thighs. Skin on her right foot has been slashed and pus formation has been observed. She was obviously thrashed. Her lips were burnt with a hot iron bar. There are cuts and burns on her private parts also. Her liver has been damaged and needs surgery,” the hospital authorities said.

As the facilities for pediatric gastroenterology treatment are not available at the hospital, she has been shifted to Chennai for better treatment. An ICDS official and a woman constable accompanied her to Chennai and will be with her for the duration of her treatment.

Narthana’s plight came to light on Tuesday after a good samaritan alerted the police. Her mother, Nagachaitanya, is a divorcee and had been looking after Narthana for the past four years ever since her husband deserted her.

The woman had been having an affair for the past six months with a certain Nagesh in whose school Narthana was studying. Nagachaitanya and Nagesh tortured the six-year-old after she reportedly revealed their affair to others.

District SP E Damodhar said Nagachaitanya and Nagesh were arrested and produced before the magistrate on Tuesday night.

They were remanded in judicial custody. “We have booked cases under Sec 307 (attempt to murder) against them,” he said.
