SRIKAKULAM: The Sri Kurmam temple here will soon get a facelift. The State Archaeology Department has come forward to extend its technical and financial support to modernise the temple and also preserve the ancient mural paintings here.

Some of the mural paintings inside the temple depicting several legends of Lord Krishna and Vishnu are in a dilapidated condition due to lack of scientific conservation and renovation methods.

In March this year, experts from the archaeology department in collaboration with the Chennai-based mural paintings research foundation completed their study on mural paintings.

Out of around 20 paintings, some have been partially damaged while others have discoloured.

However, experts ensure that they can be renovated with the latest technology. The works are likely to start by June.

Also, the department has taken up works to arrest rain water flow into the temple and complete electrification works, said temple executive officer Prasad Patnaik.

Special granite boards would be placed at the temple depicting the history and significance of the temple.

A new tortoise park had come up in place of the old park here. Visitors would be allowed to offer food to the tortoises there as a religious ritual, the EO said.
