KADAPA:At a time when YSRC leaders are demanding that the Kadapa airport be christened YSR Airport in recognition of services of late chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who inaugurated the airport on Sunday, said his government will soon send proposals to the Centre for naming the airport after saint poet Annamayya, who hailed from the district.
During the inaugural function organised at the Kadpa airport, TDP leader and Rajya Sabha MP CM Ramesh raised the issue of naming the airport after Annamayya. Stating that the people of the district want the airport in the name of renowned poet Tallapaka Annamacharya, union civil aviation minister P Ashok Gajapatiraju, who was on the dais, immediately promised to name it as Annamayya airport.
As soon as getting the proposal from the state government on the issue, the civil aviation department will process it and the airport will be christened as Annamayya airport, he said.
Stating that the union government respects regional culture and sentiments, the civil aviation minister exuded hope that the airport would have been named after Annamayya by the time he visited the district again.
Later, the chief minister said that the name of Annamayya is better suited to the Kadapa airport. “We will send the proposals to this effect to the Centre and will name the airport as Annamayya airport soon,” he asserted amid cheers from the people attending the meeting.
It may recalled that leaders of the YSRC including Kadapa MP YS Avinash Reddy, MLAs SB Amzad Basha, P Ravindranath Reddy, K Srinivasulu, YSRC district president A Amarnath Reddy and other leaders had demanded that the airport be named after YS Rajasekhara Reddy.
