GUNTUR: TDP MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao was appointed District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) chairman by Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.

In a letter, Gadkari said that every year around 1.5 lakh persons were killed in road accidents despite several measures taken by the government to reduce road fatalities. He said the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways constituted DRSC in each district and appointed chiefs to head the panel.

The Minister explained that the DRSC will meet once in three months with District Collector, SP and other officials to discuss the steps to be taken to prevent road accidents in the district.

Transport deputy commissioner G C Rajaratnam, Transport inspector Siva Nageswara Rao, AP Athletic Federation vice-president K Baji and other officials congratulated the MP on the occasion.

Addressing the officials here, the MP instructed the Transport department officials to take safety measures to reduce road accidents in the district. The Transport deputy commissioner informed the MP that the district officials have been conducting review meeting on road safety measures on third Tuesday of every month and according to the reports, accidents have increased by 1.95 %, but there has been decrease in mortality rate by 1.69%.
