VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh Power Utilities have achieved a landmark feat in the midst of severe summer conditions, successfully managing the highest-ever electricity demand in the State’s history while ensuring uninterrupted supply to all categories of consumers.

On May 21, the State Grid recorded an unprecedented energy consumption of 288.9 Million Units (MU), with a day peak demand of 15,016 MW and an evening peak demand of 12,474 MW – the highest load ever handled by the system.

Officials noted that the surge was driven by extreme heat wave conditions, with temperatures soaring to nearly 46°C in several districts. The widespread use of cooling appliances, drinking water systems, and agricultural pump sets significantly increased consumption across domestic, industrial, and agricultural sectors.

APTRANSCO, in coordination with APGENCO and DISCOMs, maintained stable supply without disruption, thanks to advance planning, monitoring, and effective load management.

Special Chief Secretary K Vijayanand commended the dedicated services of engineers, system operators, and field staff, highlighting that the achievement reflects the vision of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar to provide quality power to all.

He emphassed that additional short-term market purchases were arranged whenever necessary to safeguard public convenience and maintain grid stability during peak demand.

The utilities underscored that uninterrupted supply was ensured to households, farmers, industries, commercial establishments, and essential services even during record demand periods.

They pointed out that this milestone demonstrates the operational efficiency, preparedness, and coordinated efforts of the State’s power sector. Engineers and maintenance teams have been working tirelessly round the clock to sustain public comfort during heatwave.

Looking ahead, AP Power Utilities reassured the public that continuous measures are being taken to strengthen the grid network, boost system reliability, and expand infrastructure to meet future challenges. The government remains committed to modernising the power sector, ensuring that reliable electricity services remain available to every consumer across the State, even under extreme conditions.
