NEW DELHI: Imagine entering a space that talks about one of the most popular figures of Sufism – Jalaluddin Rumi. In an era marked by division and uncertainty, the timeless words of Rumi and his search for God, and ways to cope and find hope made the evening at Dhoomimal Gallery different. It was about understanding the man beyond his art.

Written by Mohini Kent Noon and Amrit Kent, the play ‘Rumi: Unveil the Sun’ returns to New Delhi, offering a profound meditation on unity, love, and spiritual transformation in collaboration with Dhoomimal Art Gallery and Koan Advisory.

The 13th-century poet and Sufi mystic has been written and rewritten multiple times, but what distinguishes this presentation is the historical authenticity. It delves into the life-altering bond between Rumi and his enigmatic mentor Shamsuddin Tabrizi.

Their relationship, steeped in devotion and mysticism, catalysed Rumi’s evolution into one of history’s most celebrated poets, whose verses continue to transcend time and geography.

Originally staged in 2007 during UNESCO’s ‘Year of Rumi’, the production garnered widespread acclaim, with praise from noted figures such as Habib Tanvir and Khushwant Singh. Now, nearly two decades later, it returns under the direction of Rajesh Nirmal with renewed artistic vision.

The production features Oroon Das reprising his role as Rumi, alongside Ashhar Haque as Shams. Enhanced by an original score from Jitender Singh Jamwal, costumes by Anju Modi, and movement direction by Gilles Chuyen, the play weaves together music, poetry, and performance into an immersive theatrical experience.

Scheduled at the NCUI Auditorium on April 4 and 5, the preview has already set the tone with a blend of art, Dastangoi storytelling, and Jitender Singh’s Sufi music, reflecting the production’s central theme of oneness.
