Neeraj Bawana gang member arrested after encounter in outer Delhi

Police identified the accused as Savinder alias Baba (36). Acting on a tip-off, a team laid a trap around 10 pm on Monday on the GT Karnal Road-Hiranki Pushta Road stretch to nab him.

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested an alleged member of the Neeraj Bawana/Naveen Bali gang following an encounter near GT Karnal Road. The accused is allegedly involved in six criminal cases, including murder, attempt to murder, assault and Arms Act offences.

Police identified the accused as Savinder alias Baba (36). Acting on a tip-off, a team laid a trap around 10 pm on Monday on the GT Karnal Road-Hiranki Pushta Road stretch to nab him.

“Savinder is a key active member of the dreaded Neeraj Bawana/Naveen Bali gang. He had been running a reign of terror in the Alipur and Narela areas, systematically extorting businessmen and property dealers. He was also suspected to be planning another attack on a victim that very night,” a senior police officer said.

Police said that when the accused was intercepted and asked to surrender, he allegedly opened fire indiscriminately at the police team. The police retaliated, injuring him in the left leg, following which he was overpowered, an official said.

“During the encounter, no police personnel sustained injuries,” DCP (Outer North) Shobhit D. Saksena said. The accused was immediately taken to Raja Harishchandra Hospital and was later referred to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital. He is now stable and conscious, the DCP said. Police recovered a pistol, three live cartridges and five empty cartridges from his possession.

Police said the accused was allegedly planning another attack when he was intercepted.
