MYSORE: In a move to preserve the rich heritage of folk culture and art, Kannada University in Hampi, Dravidian University in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil University in Tamil Nadu will jointly bring out a dictionary on South Indian folklore and art in an year.
These universities will come out with comprehensive edition on all forms of folk music, dance, lyrics and other colloquial forms of songs and languages in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and English.
The project is aimed at documenting different forms of folklore arts that are unique to South Indian states -- Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. The dictionary will make a comparison of various forms.
Senior folklorist from Mysore, Arvius Sundaram and folklore professor at Kannada University Dr Sa.Chi. Ramesh were appointed for the execution of the novel project.
Sundaram told the Express that though there is a standard dictionary and encyclopedia in Kannada on Karnataka's folklore, there are no such books on South Indian heritage.
"Translators will be used. The dictionary of South Indian folk arts will help students and researchers Experts in four South Indian languages will be part of the project.
The programme is expected to be completed in an year," he added.
