MYSORE: A pair of African Buffaloes arrived in Mysore Zoo from Thiruvananthapuram in exchange for a pair of Indian Gaur and Red Jungle Fowl.

Mysore Zoo is housing the African Buffalo (Cape Buffalo) for the first time and visitors will have an opportunity to view the animal that weighs between 300 and 900 kg. Both male and females have horns.

Rajan, a male buffalo around 12 years, was brought from National Zoological Park, New Delhi, in 2004,  while Bindu (11) was born in Thiruvananthapuram Zoo.

The life span of African Buffalo is 18 to 20 years, but 25 years in captivity. According to a press release by Zoo Executive Director Ravi, the African Buffalo breeds during the rainy season. This animals move in large herds for more than 18 hours and stay near water bodies. The predators of African buffalo are lions and crocodiles. ;ENS
