Lemons add juice to house debate

Express News Service

The merits of a lemon versus coconut had the Legislative Assembly in splits on Friday.

Member Shivalinge Gowda of JD(S) set the ball rolling by complaining that a small-sized lemon is sold at Rs 10 whereas big-sized coconut costs Rs 4 a piece.

JD(S) leader H D Revanna said: “Shivalinge Gowda, you don’t know the facts of the case. Lemons cost more because they are used for many purposes”.

Karnataka Sarvodaya Party MLA K S Puttanaiah noted: “The cost of lemon is high as it is used in black magic”. Law Minister T B Jayachandra made this even more explicit, by taking a dig at Revanna’s well-publicised superstitious beliefs. “If you just check Revanna’s pockets, you are sure to find lemons”, he told the House. Revanna said: “I request the minister to pass a government order making it mandatory for everyone to carry lemons in their pockets”.
