For the first time, the government has set up an election commission exclusively for holding polls to co-operative societies across the state.

Of the 36,000 co-operative societies in the State, 4,800 societies have completed their five-year term on March 31 this year and polls will be held by September 30.

State Co-operative Election Commissioner N C Muniyappa said that the commission was a set up to conduct free, fair and a transparent election. It would function on the lines of the commission set up to conduct elections to urban local bodies.

Muniyappa pointed out that the new commission that came into existence from April would prepare the model code of conduct, randomisation of the voting machines, polling stations and voters list.

It is also holding meetings with Department of Co-operative Societies in various districts starting from Monday, he added.

Elections to the Karnataka Milk Federation, Primary Agriculture Land Development Banks and District Central Co-operative Banks will be held in a phased-manner, Muniyappa said.
