A 65-year-old woman died and her husband was seriously injured in an alleged explosion at Badanavalu village in Nanjangud taluk here on Monday.

While Shivananjamma died on the spot, her husband Nanjaiah has suffered 50 per cent burns. After giving first aid at Nanjangud Government Hospital, Nanjaiah has been moved to K R Hospital. The couple’s six children had gone to work when the incident occurred.

Sources claim that for decades Nanjaiah’s family eked a living by filling propellant in firecrackers and on Monday, the couple were just doing that when the explosion occurred.

However, SP R Dileep ruled out that the family was involved in manufacturing firecrackers and said the incident occurred due to explosives stored in the house to chase away wild boars.

Due to the impact of the explosion, seven neighbouring houses were damaged. The fire tenders worked for nearly an-hour-and-a-half to contain the flames. A case of accidental fire has been registered, Dileep said.
