First session of new Assembly begins on 29th

Governor H R Bhardwaj has summoned the first session of the newly-formed 14th state Assembly which will have an eight-day session from Wednesday. According to sources, the Governor has summoned the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

The first two days are reserved for administering oath or affirmation to the newly-elected members. Election to the office of the Assembly Speaker will be held on Friday. Bhardwaj will address the joint session of the state legislature for the second time this year as the new Assembly has been formed after completion of the five-year term of the 13th Assembly.

Assembly Secretariat sources told Express that though the Governor will address the joint session the house would witness the normal business in the next four days.

Malikayya Guttedar, a senior member of the House will act as the protem Speaker and administer oath of office to the new members.

The Congress returned to power in the state after a gap of over seven years by bagging a comfortable and working majority of as many as 121 seats followed by the BJP and JD(S) securing 40 seats each respectively. In the May 5 elections, as many as six women candidates also made their maiden entries to the Lower House in Vidhana Soudha.  Secretariat sources in the state Legislative Council said that the session of the Upper House has been convened to meet for five days from May 29.

The House will sit till June 7, sources said.
