Gales destroy 54 houses in Davangere, boy killed in Athani

Heavy rains accompanied by gales lashed the district, destroying as many as 54 houses, 14 transformers and 163 electric poles on Sunday night.

Additional DC Doddappa said 33 houses were partially damaged in the taluk, three houses in Chennagiri and 18 houses in Harapanahalli taluk. “Bananna plantations were destroyed at Hiremegalageri village in Harapanahalli taluk. The loss is estimated at `3.65 lakh in Davangere taluk and `2.10 lakh in Chennagiri and Harapanahalli taluks,” said Doddappa.

As many as 163 electric poles and 14 transformers were destroyed resulting in power failure in many villages on Sunday night. The loss is estimated at `9.10 lakh, he said. The district received an average rainfall of 23.8 mm. Davangere taluk-30.4 mm, Harihar-27.7, Honnali-9.6, Chennagiri-36 mm, Harapanahalli-28.9, Jagalur-10.1 mm.

In Athani

A boy was killed when a tin sheet of a house, blown off by strong winds, fell on him at Badagi village in Athani taluk on Monday. The deceased was identified as Irappa Malakappa Mamadapur (15). Mamadapur and others of his colony ran out from their houses when strong winds started blowing off tin sheets of many houses in the afternoon on Monday. Unfortunately, the sheet of Mamadapur’s house fell on him causing serious injuries. The boy succumbed on the way to a hospital.

Two Killed in Mishap

Davangere: Two people were killed on the spot when the two-wheeler on which they were riding hit a tree that had fallen due to rains near Anajii village on Sunday night. According to police sources, Rudresh (38) and Siddalingappa (36) of Anaji village had come to the city for work and were returning home when the incident took place. Rural police are investigating. At Shekarappa Nagar, an electric pole fell on a house damaging the front portion. PB Road was the worst-hit area with knee-deep water.
