Kagodu may be Assembly Speaker

Senior Congress leader and Sagar MLA Kagodu Thimmappa is likely to be elected unopposed as the Speaker of the 14th Legislative Assembly on Friday.

The election to the Speaker’s post would be held on Friday. Eighty-two-year-old Thimmappa, a socialist, filed his nomination papers with the Returning Officer and Secretary of the Assembly Omprakash on Thursday. The principal Opposition party Janata Dal (S) is not likely to field its candidate for because of its low strength in the Assembly.

CM Siddaramaiah, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra and others accompanied Thimmappa at the time of filing nomination papers.  It may be mentioned here Thimmappa initially was reluctant to accept the Speaker’s post, but later agreed when the party high command asked him to accept it. He was eyeing for a berth in the Cabinet Council.
