BENGALURU: The second unit of Yeramarus Thermal Power Station (YTPS) in Raichur started commercial operations late  on Thursday night.  The YTPS has adopted supercritical technology and the two units are the first 800 MW rating thermal units in Karnataka.

According to Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) officials, the unit-2 was synchronised to grid on July 21, 2016 and full load 800 MW capacity test was successfully conducted on March 29. The Commercial Operation Declaration (COD) of Unit-2 was successfully completed from March 3 to 6. The total generation achieved during the COD was 58.33 million units. Unit 1 had achieved COD on March 7.

KPCL Managing Director Kumar Naik said officials were continuously monitoring the situation for those 72 hours and the completion of the COD was witnessed by officials from State Load Dispatch, Escoms, Electricity Inspectorate and Central Power Research Institute.

“We wanted this to happen before March 31, but due to some technical glitches, we had to delay the process. The 72- hour process went off smoothly,” he said.

The commercial power generation will still take at least a couple of months. The work on the transmission lines to evacuate the power is not ready yet.“Work on coal and ash handling systems is also pending,” Naik said, adding Unit-1 will be initially generating approx 500 MW power.
