Gangster shot at in Karnataka district court premises

VIJAYAPURA: A notorious gangster was shot at by an unknown assailant in district court premises in Karnataka today morning. The gangster Bagappa Harijan, 40, has been on bail for the last six months had come to Vijayapura district court in connection with a murder case, when he was shot at.

The police said five rounds were fired at Harijan, who is presently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Vijayapura. The incident occurred at around 10.30 am when Harijan was walking towards the additional court complex. The assailant was lurking behind trees and was waiting for Harijan.

Police have recovered cartridges from the spot.

The doctors attending Harijan confirmed that five bullets were shot at him from a close range. They said an operation is being conducted on Harijan who is in a critical condition.

Police suspect old rivalry behind the shooting incident but did not pinpoint any suspects yet. Harijan was wanted in connecting with murder and extortions reported from Vijayapura, Kalaburagi and parts of Maharashtra.
