TUMAKURU: Even after Odisha tribal Dana Majhi’s photo of him carrying his wife’s body caught the nation’s attention, nothing appears to have changed on the ground.
In a similar incident in Madhugiri taluk on Sunday, a man brought his ailing daughter to a Primary Health Centre (PHC) for treatment.
But when she was declared brought dead, he was forced to arrange a two-wheeler to transport her mortal remains back to his village. This was because neither the ill-equipped PHC had an ambulance nor was the father able to afford to hire a private vehicle. Narayanaraju, a scribe from Madhugiri, claimed that even the public transport refused to ferry the body.
Faced with no other option, Thimmappa of Veerapura village managed to arrange a moped to carry his daughter Ratnamma’s (20) corpse from the PHC at Kodigenhalli.
With a relative riding the two-wheeler and another on pillion, they held the body between them and shifted it to the village.
On Monday, the Health department officials visited the PHC and took stock of the situation.
Zilla Panchayat member Manjula Adinarayana Reddy alleged that despite urging the officials at the ZP for an ambulance for the PHC, no action has been taken so far.
