THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former MLA and Congress leader B Vijayakumar died at the Regional Cancer Centre here on Tuesday morning. He was 59. He is survived by wife Radhika, son Vivek Vijayan and daughter Vidya Vijayan.
Vijayakumar was under treatment for the last two months at the RCC and Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram.
In between, he was taken to the Christian Medical College, Vellore.
Vijayakumar was the member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly thrice, in 1991, 1996 and 2001 representing the Thiruvananthapuram East constituency.
But he was defeated in the 2006 Assembly elections.He was the general secretary of the District Congress Committee and at present he was the member of AICC and executive member of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee.
Born to K G Bhaskaran Nair and Rugmini Amma in 1949, Vijayakumar, a law graduate, entered politics in his student’s days. For 30 years, he was the director of Thiruvananthapuram Co-operative Urban Bank and at present he was the president of the bank. He was also the chairman of Kerala State Cooperative Urban Bank Federation. For the last five years, he was the president of National Federation of Urban Cooperat ive Banks.
He was also the director of Oushadhi and Handloom Development Corporation (Hanveev).
During his tenure as MLA and director Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA), he was instrumental in spearheading many of the development projects in the capital city.
The body of the leader was brought to his house in Sasthamangalam from the hospital where his relatives paid last respects. The body was kept at the KPCC headquarters, the DCC office and at the head-office of Urban Bank for the public to homage.
The body was taken to Santhi Kavadam for cremation later in the evening.
