PALAKKAD: The state-level inauguration of the collection of data of the Scheduled Caste and Tribe colonies, to be held at Kannadi in Palakkad, will be inaugurated by Minister for Welfare of   Scheduled Caste and Tribes A K Balan on Saturday evening.

The census is held in order to assure that the welfare programmes meant for these sections trickle down to the beneficiaries. The census data of SC/ST habitats (colonies)  in all the local body areas were being prepared as a prelude to the finalisation of the Eleventh Five Year  plan. The aim is to formulate developmental and welfare schemes targeting each family and habitat under the special component plan. The programme is being implemented jointly by the Scheduled Caste and Tribe Development Department, Local Administration Department and the Kila.

The survey will be carried out in every area where five or more Scheduled Caste families reside by considering it a colony. The survey will be conducted in the 13,649 colonies located in 999 grama panchayats, 53 municipalities and five corporations of the State.
