ALUVA: The foundation stone of the blind-friendly, barrier-free girls hostel on the premises of the Blind School in Keezhumad near here, was laid by Metropolitan Yuhanon Mar Polycarpose on Friday.

The hostel being constructed at a cost of  Rs 60 lakh, is sponsored by the Presbyterian Women, USA, and  will have a lift, ramp, disabled-friendly corridor and toilets. The construction of the hostel is a part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Blind School. The celebrations will conclude in 2011.

Meanwhile, as a jubilee gift to Keezhumad Blind School, standard II student Asna Aslam of the school was chosen for the National Award for the Best Child Actor in the Malayalam short film, Kelkkunnundo, school administrator Jiji Peter said. Kerala Blind School Society working chairman Johnson Varghese, vice-president Thomas John, former working chairman Jacob Mannaraprayil Cor Episcopa, construction convener Thomas Varghese, manager Varghese Alexander and PC Chacko spoke.
