KOTTAYAM: District Additional Special Judge S Jagadeesh on Thursday sentenced Xavy Thomas, 50, of Valiaparambil, near Kothanalloor railway gate, to seven years rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a woman after attacking her husband.

Xavy was also asked to pay a fine of Rs 30,000. He was charged under various sections for sexual assault, robbery and attacking the couple.

The crime happened on February 23 last year. The couple was returning from Ettumanoor temple after witnessing the ‘Arattu’ festival. While they were walking towards their house after getting down at the Kothanalloor bus stop, Xavy attacked the husband and brought him down and forcibly dragged the lady to the nearby compound where he sexually assaulted her.

After the heinous act, he escaped with her gold ornaments.
