KOCHI:  Angry villagers in Vadakkekkara, Erattupetta, attacked a bar hotel on Thursday morning, accusing the hotel authorities of dumping sewage into the Meenachil river.

According to police officials, the villagers confronted the hotel authorities when they saw that toilet waste from the Mareena Bar Hotel was discharged into the river. They also accused the hotel owners of polluting the Meenachil river by opening the sewage pipe leading from the toilet for the past many days.

The angry mob threw stones and damaged generators and air conditioners at the hotel. Also, the villagers were seen to have smashed plates in the kitchen of the hotel.  

The hotel owner denies the allegations and said that the water discharged into the river was that used in washing. He said the hotel had been closed for the day and had asked the staff to wash the place.

Two journalists were attacked during the clash. According to photographer Bobin who filed a case against the villagers accusing them of throwing stones at them while taking photographs during the incident.

Erattupetta Police have filed a case against the villagers for causing damages to the hotel. The Police plan to investigate further into the incident.
