THRISSUR: The third-year mechanical students at Thyagarajan Polytechnic College, Amballur, claim to have developed a crane that can be operated with a remote control.

The device, named RC Tower Crane, has been developed under the leadership of Febin Francis. Around 12 students participated in developing the crane.

“The crane can be operated with a remote control at a distance of 200 metres. It is a cost-effective one as it costs only Rs 28,000,” Febin said. The speciality of the crane is that the three operations, such as 360 degree rotation, movement with a trolley, lifting of weight and unloading can be done concurrently.  The height of the crane is 11 feet and its lifting capacity is 500 kg. Ditto Denny Appadan, Hemant Kumar and Franco Francis were also involved in the realisation of the crane. It took four months to develop it. C C Lasar, head of the department (mechanical), and other lectures supported us in our venture, Febin said.
