THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state unit of the CPI has expelled senior leader M Rahmathulla from the party.  Rahmathulla, who was a national council member and state executive committee member of the party, was expelled on Tuesday by the CPI secretariat.

“He betrayed the party,’’ said CPI state secretary C K Chandrappan. He said that the party had given Rahmathulla all possible benefits. “He joined us during his student days. Without saying a word to any of us, he crossed over to Muslim League,’’ Chandrappan told reporters.

Rahmathulla was the chairman of the Kerala State Housing Board since 2006. He was the LDF candidate from Wayanad during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

CPI sources indicated that apart from the issues in Eranad constituency, there were other personal issues as well which led his exit from the party.

“He demanded a PSC member post for his wife when CPI was supposed to nominate two members. But, it was turned down by the party,’’ said a leader.   Sources also indicated that Rahmathulla’s exit points to the serious difference of opinion among the two strong groups in the party.
