THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Nirmithi Kendra is on an ambitious project to construct concrete rooms which can be shifted from one place to another to facilitate accommodation for the participants of mega events.

The portable cabins have been introduced in European countries and are already popular.  This will help in finding  a solution to the demand  for accommodation when sports or mega activities are  conducted in the state.

The technology is already developed by the European countries,  says Nirmithi Kendra  chief technical officer B Jayan. The budget proposal for this project will be included in the 12th Five Year Plan. Though the walls and roofs of the cabins will be concrete, the windows and doors will be made of aluminium or steel fabrication. These fabricated parts can be removed and again installed at each locations.

Nirmithi Kendra is in the process of designing

the rooms suitable for Kerala. Before the next financial year a clear picture about the new project would be evolved.

According to Jayan, accommodation is a great problem for the organisers when conducting events in which large number of people take part.

The new project will help shift the rooms from

one place to another in trucks with the help of cranes.

“Initially the cost of the project will be high.

But, when the demand increases it will become break-even in a short time,’’ Jayan said.  Nirmithi Kendra has  14 regional centres in  Kerala and there is sufficient space for the project in 10 districts.  Each unit will be set up in these areas, one at a time, where six to eight units can be kept.

Nirmithi Kendra, which is engaged in low-cost building, has chosen  concrete structure for the portable cabins, as it  should be strong to resist any damage during transportation.

The cost of accommodation will also come down with using this temporary facility for the participants of  events.
