KOCHI: Kerala society has not properly recognised the real and brave fighter in Advocate G Janardhana Kurup, said CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.

Inaugurating the Advocate Janardhana Kurup commemoration meet here on Thursday, Vijayan opined that Kurup was a real Communist, from whom the new generation has a lot to learn.

“A real Communist will keep on fighting, irrespective of whichever field he is in. He does not think about what he will get from society in return. Kurup was a real Communist. He never made any compromises in life. Throughout his life, whichever field he was in, he tried to defend his organisation,” Vijayan pointed out.    Though Kurup has made his mark in a number of fields, society  generally remembers him for two things - first as an eminent lawyer. Second, as one of the prominent founder- members of KPAC, the theatre group.

“When we recall Kurup’s contributions to society, it’s connected with a period in Kerala history. He represents a period in Kerala history, which is very rare,” Vijayan said.

Pinarayi recalled the tortures that Kurup underwent during various struggles and the contributions that he made for setting up KPAC. As a theatre activist, Kurup had been in the forefront of fight against social issues. As an advocate, he showed social commitment, Vijayan said.

C N Mohanan presided over the function.
