Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan has come out in support of the Nair Service Society (NSS) hailing its history of service and tradition of effecting social change. Speaking at a seminar series on ‘Contemporary politics and development,’ being organised under the aegis of the Press Club here on Wednesday, he said the NSS had a great tradition of social service and had played a crucial role in effecting social and political changes in the state.

Referring to the article appeared in the IUML mouthpiece ‘Chandrika’, he said that no one should have thought that anything could be written. There should be mutual respect. The article was in bad taste, he said. “No one should have belittled the NSS. It is an organisation which had a role in changing the face of Kerala’s history,” he said. Vellappally said politicians of all hues are visiting the NSS headquarters openly and some times “covering their face.” The visit to Changanassery has been going on for a long time, he said. “There is no politician in the state who has not sought the help of the NSS during the elections,” the SNDP Yogam leader said.

Asked why he did not receive much support from his own community when the Alappuzha DCC president criticised him, he replied that it was the weakness of his community. “See how the Nair community behaved when G Sukumaran Nair came out against the government. No DCC president or Communist leader had openly questioned Sukumaran Nair. That is the strength of the NSS,” Vellappally said.

Defends Hindu Unity

He said there are sections of politicians and other forces who are intolerant about Nair-Ezhava unity. But, in fact, the unity of the majority communities is not against anyone but to do good to society and to ensure social justice to all.
