Munnar encroachments: Details sought

Express News Service

The High Court on Thursday directed the state government to submit a report on the action taken on suggestions given by the Idukki District Collector in 2010 on the encroachments in the Munnar area.

The report has to be submitted within a month. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice K Vinod Chandran issued the order and directed the Special Government Pleader (Revenue) to secure an action taken report from the Idukki District Collector or any special officer and submit it before the court.

The Bench observed that subsequent to the report by the District Collector on February 15, 2010, nothing was placed on record showing the progress made by the government and the Cabinet Sub-committee specially constituted for handling the Munnar issue.

The Bench passed the order on a petition filed by the Paristhithi Samrakshana Samithi, Muthalakodam, to evict encroachers of government land. The petitioner also sought a directive to the state to cancel all bogus titles, possession certificate and tax receipts that were unearthed, as per the Collector’s report.
