Pregnant woman run over by train

Express News Service

A nine-month pregnant woman was killed when a train ran over her while she was trying to cross the level crossing at Ambattukavu near here on Friday morning. Beevi, 30, wife of Thadathil Ehab, was taking her son Habib and nephew to school when Ernad Express ran over her. The children were saved. Though Beevi died on the spot, bystanders took her to a hospital to save the unborn child.

Dr Khadija Salam, who carried out the surgery, was able to deliver the baby but it could not be saved. Beevi’s death has strengthened the local people’s long-standing demand for a timber bridge over the railway line. The previous government had allocated approximately `78 lakh for the bridge but the governing committee of the Southern Railway had not taken up the work.
