A couple from Visakhapatnam drowned when the boat they were riding on capsized in the Punnamada lake here on Tuesday.

Sagar, 30, and wife Eilisitti Nagamani, 26, of Golaveedhi, Bheemunipatnam, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, are the deceased.

Eilisitti’s body was fished out at 5.30 pm, while the search for the body of Sagar  continued late night.

The police said that they had rented a shikara boat for cruising. The boat capsized around 3 pm in the middle of the lake east of the Finishing Point. The boat driver and helper escaped, the police said.

The police said that the accident happened around 3 km away from the shore. The heavy rain disrupted rescue operations.

The employees of the other houseboats, hovering around the lake, noticed the incident and informed the police.

The police and Fire and Rescue Service personnel reached the spot in half an hour. The body of Eilisitti was found two hours after the accident.

The police said that the lake water current was very high in the area. District Collector  N Padmakumar said that he has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
