Daytime loadshedding to be lifted today

Express News Service

Daytime loadshedding will be lifted from Wednesday onwards in the State. The decision comes in the wake of the hydel reservoirs receiving adequate in-flow, Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed informed the Assembly on Tuesday.

On Monday, the reservoirs had water enough to generate 490 million units.

The same day last year, the water levels were sufficient to generate only 447 MU, the Minister said.

At present, the State Electricity Regulatory Commission has allowed the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) to impose loadshedding continuously for one hour during daytime - between 9 am and 5 pm - and another half hour between 7 pm and 11 pm. The loadshedding should have been lifted on May 31, but the KSEB had urged the Commission to extend it to June 30. The Commission, however, approved the proposal only in part, extending the same to June 15.

At present, the reservoir of the Idukki project has water enough to generate 276.4 MU, and the Pamba reservoir, 75.4 MU. As per data presented by the Electricity Minister in the Assembly, power consumption in the State had overshot KSEB expectations only in April this summer season.

The average monthly consumption in May was 57.1 MU, although the KSEB had expected it to touch 59.9 MU.
