Order reserved on Empee scion bail

Express News Service

The Kerala High Court on Tuesday reserved its order on the anticipatory bail plea by P Shaji, a suspect in a case registered by Traffic Investigation wing, Anna Balaji police station in Chennai.

The prosecution case is that, Shaji, son of Empee group founder-chairman Purushothaman, was involved in an accident which took place on May 23 that resulted in the death of an 11-year-old boy.

Two other children who were sleeping on the pavement near the Children’s hospital at Egmore were injured.

The speeding Mercedes Benz in which Shaji was traveling hit a police vehicle and swerved into the pavement where the children were sleeping.

Appearing for the state, Director General of Prosecution T Asaf Ali vehemently opposed the bail plea and submitted that the Kerala HC has no jurisdiction to consider the bail plea.

“The incident occurred in Chennai and has no connections in Kerala. Hence the petition is not maintainable. The Madras High Court had already dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of the accused,” he said, adding the crime was serious in nature and a cop was suspended  for allegedly favoring the accused.
