Express News Service

Documentary evidence in the Enrica Lexie firing case, including weapons, electronic gadgets and documents seized from the Italian vessel, which were in the custody of the District and Sessions Court, was transferred on Monday, to the Supreme Court through the High Court.

According to sources, the Sessions Court ordered the transfer, following a petition submitted by National Investigation Agency (NIA) DySP P Vikraman seeking the release of documents to NIA, to facilitate the reinvestigation. However, as the Supreme Court had earlier ordered the transfer of the evidence to the special court designated for the case, the Sessions Court ordered to transfer the evidence to the Supreme Court through the High Court. On Monday, the evidence, stored in the District Treasury, were taken to Kochi, where it was handed over to the HC Registrar.

The evidence transferred include six Beretta rifles, two Herstal Minimi machine guns, body armours, cases of bullets and electronic gadgets seized from the vessel.

According to the chargesheet filed by the state police in the case, the Herstal Minimi light-weight machine guns were used for shooting the fishermen.  The 17 bullets recovered from the bodies of the deceased fishermen and fishing boat are also among the evidence.  Other evidence include a Voyage Data Recorder, GPS system, log books, ID cards of the marines and voyage charts.
