Malayalam Poet ONV Kurup Died at 84

The poet was active in his cultural and social spheres till recently and had attended the concert of Pakistani singer Ghulam Ali in January.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Jnanpith awardee and poet ONV Kurup died on Saturday at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram due to age-related illness. He was 84. He was suffering from illness for a while and suffered a heart attack on Saturday 4.50 p.m.

The poet was active in his cultural and social spheres till recently and had attended the concert of Pakistani singer Ghulam Ali here in January.  He has penned many memorable lyrics for Malayalam cinema and dramas.

Familiar to Keralites as ONV, he was conferred with Padma Shri in 1998 and Padma Vibhushan in 2011. He is survived by his wife Sarojini and two children.
